Fruit Fly Species Overview: Part 1

Physical Appearance of the Fruit Fly

With bright red eyes, a tan and hairy body, Fruit Flies aren’t going to win any beauty contests. Females grow to about 2.5 millimeters, slightly larger than males. Males have a distinct black patch on the abdomen while females only have rings spanning the entire abdomen.

Where Are They Coming from?

Fruit Flies find most temperate climates ideal. They generally don’t fare well with extreme climate conditions.

Though they can be inadvertently brought home from the grocery store or farmer’s market, Fruit Flies have other ways to find their way into your home. Fruit Flies can find fruit left out on your table with their excellent sense of smell. They are also attracted to moist areas like drain pipes and empty water bottles.

Why Am I Suddenly Seeing Fruit Flies?

Fruit left out especially in warmer months become overripe faster. Able to detect fruit from long distances, Fruit Flies can soon envelop the same fruits that you’re about to eat! They will also be attracted to the moisture and sugar found in discarded wine, beer and soda cans and bottles. They will also feed on the organic material found in drains or left in the bottom of garbage cans.
